Vegas Delivery

She should’ve known the directions would take her to some seedy, dark alley. Every town had one, even the sun-drenched desert of Las Vegas. The high walls blocked most of the sun, plunging the area in near complete darkness. The acrid relics of a more than a hundred Chinese take-go meals burned her nostril and the back of her throat.

As Joanna walked between the walls, she tighten her grip on the package, silently praying the exchange would be quick and, most importantly, painless. According to the instructions she’d received during the phone call, she was to leave the package inside a silver-colored mailbox at the end of the alleyway.  She felt she was being watched as she walked down the alley. She looked to her left, then to the right, then behind her. Her palms suddenly became sweaty and the adrenaline coursing through her veins threatened to shut down her capacity to think rationally.

She took three deep breaths to steady herself, but when she heard what she thought was a woman’s scream, she power-walked the last twenty steps. She found the large silver-colored box. The box divided into three sections, each with a separate lock compartment. The voice on the phone told her she was to place the package in the middle compartment. She grasped the lock and held it in her hand. Her sweaty palms made it difficult to hold the lock and the package, and she set the package on the ground. The scream wailed again. Only this time is was a decimal higher than before.

“What the hell was the combination?” she reprimanded herself. “1-3-1-7-5. Yes, got it.”

She yanked on the lock and pulled down the compartment door. Inside was envelope stuff with her name on it. She removed the envelope, stuffed the package inside and slammed the door shut. She wanted to tear open the envelope, but she heard the scream again. This time it sounded as if it was coming from right behind her.

“No need to tell me twice to get the hell out of dodge,” she said and spirited back to her car.
