Dublin’s Hidden Gems: A Four-Museum Adventure

My thrilling 2025 Four-Leaf Clover Adventure in Dublin took an exhilarating turn as I swapped hotels and delved into an exploration of four museums that felt like hidden treasures waiting to be uncovered.

Armed with my detective skills and a sense of adventure, I set off on a quest, navigating the city with an enthusiasm that turned each corner into a tantalizing mystery.

Hmm, maybe that’s why I was irresistibly drawn to the allure of a murder mystery?

First things first. I departed the bustling city centre for the enchanting suburbia atmosphere of the Roxford Lodge Hotel, my new sanctuary in this vibrant city. Each step of the journey was a pulse of excitement, setting the stage for unforgettable experiences ahead!

ROXFORD LODGE HOTEL

The Roxford Lodge Hotel stood out to me for two distinct reasons.

Firstly, it was a familiar haven from my previous visit to the Emerald Isle.

Secondly, it was the most affordable hotel that met my unique and quirky standards, making it a perfect choice for my stay.

Customer service was fantastic! From check-in to my extremely early 0300 check-out, the staff went above and beyond to ensure my stay was pleasant and comfortable!

I selected the Classic Deluxe Single Room.

The 12-square-meter room was compact, yet gave me a homey and warm feeling. There was also a jacuzzi bathtub, so the room was perfect in my eyes. It was also equipped with a mini-fridge for my snacky-snacks, and a ‘clean’ tea kettle, so no need for the vinegar descaling.

NATIONAL PRINT MUSEUM

After check-in and a quick refresh, I headed to the National Print Museum. I discovered this hidden gem while perusing the hotel’s convenient ‘Things to Do Nearby’ section. To my delight, the museum was just a short stroll away, nestled around the corner from the hotel.

Best of all, entry was absolutely free!

Wow, what a fantastic opportunity to save some cash and get my steps in.

As I stepped inside, I was immediately enveloped by the rich aroma of ink and the faint hum of vintage machinery. The museum is ingeniously designed to resemble a traditional print shop, showcasing fully operational letterpress equipment that whispers tales of a bygone era.

A staff member warmly welcomed me and provided a charming informational brochure styled like an old newspaper. This delightful touch set the tone for my visit.

The museum boasts an astounding working collection of over 10,000 artifacts that celebrate Ireland’s deep-rooted printing heritage and craftsmanship. The layout is intricately crafted to mimic a real print workshop, showcasing an array of printing machinery, colorful printing blocks, and both metal and wooden movable type.

The atmosphere is alive with history, as shelves brim with fascinating ephemera, photographs, and stacks of books, pamphlets, and periodicals waiting to be explored.

The museum’s free entry alone had it destined for a respectable three-star rating. However, the stellar customer service, equipment, exhibitions, and activities elevated it to five stars in an instant!

I was captivated by the depth of knowledge I gained about the printing process, far more than I had ever anticipated. It was pure joy to watch the engineers skillfully maintain the printers, ensuring they operated at peak efficiency. The Poster Boys exhibition was a particularly delightful highlight — a feast for the eyes that made the hour spent there feel all too brief. What a splendid way to immerse myself in the art of printing!

MOLI – MUSEUM OF LITERATURE IRELAND

The MoLI, or Museum of Literature Ireland, is an absolute treasure trove for anyone captivated by the rich tapestry of Irish literary heritage. From the moment I stepped through its doors, I was enveloped in a world brimming with creativity and passion.

Though the €14.50 entry fee might seem a tad indulgent, the serenity of the museum, free from the hustle and bustle of crowds, transformed my visit into a personal journey through the literary realms of Ireland.

The exhibit dedicated to James Joyce is the museum’s highlight, pulling me into the depths of his groundbreaking works and the complexities of his life. Interactive displays and thoughtfully curated artifacts breathe life into Joyce’s genius, making me feel connected to his vibrant imagination.

The joy of seeing the Copy Number 1 of Ulysses was simply #AWESOME!

Throughout the museum, I discovered a rich array of exhibits celebrating other iconic Irish authors. Each story unfolds like a beautifully woven tapestry, igniting my passion for literature and inspiring me to stop my doggone procrastination and finish my third novel.

The MoLI was not just a visit; it’s an unforgettable exploration of the soul of Irish literature. And it certainly added fuel to my determination to continue documenting my characters’ wacky adventures.

THE REVENUE MUSEUM

Imagine stumbling upon a treasure tucked away within the historic grounds of Dublin Castle. The quaint yet captivating Revenue Museum unveils the intriguing world of Ireland’s Revenue Service.

With free entry, this charming museum offers a unique and thought-provoking perspective on the evolution of taxation and customs throughout the ages.

As I stepped inside, I was immediately transported through time, encountering displays that brought to life the often controversial and complex nature of tax collection and customs control. From the medieval practices of yesteryears to modern-day implications, each exhibit encouraged me to ponder the essential role that revenue generation has played in shaping Ireland.

This small museum truly is a hidden gem. Located on the grounds of Dublin Castle, I almost didn’t find it. Luckily, my curiosity pulled me back, and what a delightful discovery it was.

The museum captivated me with its engaging storytelling and rich historical context, transforming what could have been a mundane subject into a riveting experience. The history of taxes and customs is fascinating and worth a thirty-minute visit.

I also enjoyed learning more about Bulmer Hobson, a key figure in the formation of the Irish Volunteers. His deep involvement with the revenue service provides an unexpected glimpse into how history intertwines with everyday governance.

So glad I decided to take a break from the bustling streets of Dublin and step into this small but mighty museum. Here, I unlock the secrets of Ireland’s fiscal past. I walked away, not just informed but inspired by the essential threads of history that bind us all.

THE GARDA MUSEUM

Suppose I hadn’t taken a peek at the Dublin Castle map. In that case, I might have strolled right past the Garda Museum – yet another hidden treasure waiting to be uncovered.

With free entry, I already felt like I had hit the jackpot, but the museum quickly dazzled me into giving it a well-deserved five-star review. From its clever layout to the fascinating exhibits, it’s a gem that truly sparkles.

My visit was a delightful dive into history that had me happily absorbed for well over 70 minutes. I found myself particularly captivated by the Crime Scene Investigation exhibit.

Wow, that allure of solving a murder mystery is growing stronger.

The Women Garda exhibit was another fascinating exhibit that proved genuinely inspiring. It shed light on the remarkable contributions of women in law enforcement.

It was a wonderful experience that left me both informed and entertained. If you find yourself in the area, do yourself a favor and pop in; you won’t regret it!

FINAL THOUGHTS

I truly enjoyed exploring these ‘hidden gems.’

Discovering activities, museums, and attractions beyond the typical Top Ten travel list is vital for enriching my travel escapades and enhancing my understanding of a destination’s culture.

These hidden treasures not only foster a sense of adventure but also promote personal growth and creative inspiration. By embracing the full spectrum of what a city has to offer, I can cultivate a more profound appreciation for the unique narratives that shape each destination, ultimately enriching my journeys and making them truly unforgettable.
