Monaco: A Glitz and Glamour Adventure

As I stepped onto the vibrant platform at Cannes train station, an electrifying thrill surged through me. This was it — a dream ignited by shimmering postcards and whispered stories.

Here I was, a lady from Compton, California, on the cusp of stepping into the dazzling embrace of Monaco!

With my ticket gripped tightly in my hand and anticipation dancing in my heart, I hopped onto the train, ready to dive headfirst into the unparalleled glamour of the Riviera.

The ride was exciting and filled with beautiful sights. I leaned against the cool glass, amazed as the scenery changed quickly — from sunny beaches to steep cliffs and elegant villas leading down to the bright blue sea.

Each passing moment pulled me deeper into the enchanting world that awaited me!

WELCOME TO MONACO

It was only about an hour before I arrived at the Monaco-Monte Carlo station, where I jumped off and was immediately greeted by the unmistakable air of opulence.

HOP ON/HOP OFF TOUR

The first order of business? The Le Grand Tour Hop On/Hop Off bus.

Surprised that Monaco had a Hop On/Hop Off tour? Me too.

Nevertheless, I try to take a hop-on, hop-off tour on my first trip to any city. It is a great way to see the popular sites and get the lay of the land for future walks around the city.

As I hopped on the upper deck, I plopped down with a view that rivaled any VIP box at the Monaco Grand Prix. Since it was the ‘low’ travel season, though, there were only two other passengers.

Awesome! I felt like I was on an exclusive private tour — without the expensive price tag.

SCENIC STOPS ALONG THE WAY

The tour kicks off at the Bateau Bus, a quirky, eco-friendly gem in Monaco. Here you can hop onto a solar-powered electric boat-bus that glides effortlessly across Port Hercule, connecting Quai Antoine 1ᵉʳ and Quai des États-Unis.

In just 10 minutes, you can reach the enchanting Rocher or the glamorous Monte-Carlo. With departures every 20 minutes and a fare of only €2, it’s not just a ride; it’s a charming experience with stunning views of the Mediterranean. Why not take this scenic route and add some flair to your travels?

As the bus wound through the glamorous streets, we passed the serene Jardin Japonais, where cherry blossoms swayed gently, offering a tranquil escape. The iconic Stade Louis II came into view — a lively arena pulsing with the energy of passionate AS Monaco football fans.

Traveler’s Note: If you are arriving in Monaco by car, use the Stade Louis II car park and take public transport during your time in the city. Saves on the time you’d spend looking for a legal place to park.

Next came the breathtaking Musée Océanographique, perched dramatically on cliffs, inviting visitors to explore the ocean’s mysteries. Next, the Villa Sauber caught our eye, an architectural gem that beckons art lovers with its chic exhibitions.

MONACO GRAND PRIX STARTING LINE

By now, the bus had reached Boulevard Albert 1ᵉʳ, where you can see the  Monaco Grand Prix starting line.

I could almost hear the roar of the engines and feel the thrill of the race — the tight corners, the uphill climbs — talk about a hair-raising experience without breaking a sweat!

We faced the legendary Fairmont Hairpin, infamous as the slowest corner in Formula 1. This near 180-degree turn became a pulse-pounding challenge, a bottleneck where fortunes could change in an instant.

As the bus sped toward the turn, adrenaline surged through me — excitement clashed with the fear of miscalculation.

Would we conquer the curve, or would it lead to disaster? The anticipation was electric, each heartbeat heightening the thrill.

STUNNING VIEWS

The tour continued, stopping at several breathtaking viewpoints, each offering a different angle of the Mediterranean.

My camera was working overtime, snapping pictures of soaring yachts anchored in the harbor and the majestic cliffs that defined the coastline.

THE ILLUSTRIOUS CASINO DE MONTE-CARLO

Finally, we reached the pièce de résistance: the illustrious Casino de Monte-Carlo, the world’s most famous casino.

Nestled in the heart of Monaco, this architectural gem showcases a stunning Belle Époque façade, adorned with intricate sculptures and lush gardens.

The iconic Casino de Monte-Carlo’s grandeur took my breath away, its ornate architecture and lush gardens radiating timeless elegance and allure.

As I stepped off the bus for a closer look, I felt like I had been transported into a James Bond movie — though I was wearing sneakers and a denim jeans rather than a sharp tuxedo.

The grandeur of the casino took my breath away with its ornate architecture and lush gardens. I couldn’t resist taking a stroll around the Kenzo-designed entrance, where the air was thick with the anticipation of high stakes.

No photos were allowed inside, but it was still magnificent.

GAMBLING FANTASIES

Once inside, I allowed myself a brief fantasy about what I would do if I hit the jackpot. Would I be a high roller, sipping champagne and throwing chips around like confetti?

The Grand Hall, featuring ornate frescoes and gilded moldings, transported us to a glamorous era of high rollers and casual admirers alike.

And I didn’t lose one cent. Not one penny.

Okay, I didn’t win either, but I didn’t lose.

Beyond the thrill of gaming, the casino stands as a cultural icon, celebrated in film and art.

Whether you’re a seasoned player or an architecture enthusiast, a visit to the Casino de Monte-Carlo is an awe-inspiring experience that captures the essence of luxury and excitement.

PRINCE’S PALACE OF MONACO

Post-casino, I hopped back on the bus, and we made our way up to the Prince’s Palace of Monaco.

Ride up to the Prince’s Palace

Perched high on Monaco’s famous Rock, it offered stunning views that made my heart flutter.

The palace was closed during my adventure, which was a bummer, but not much.

Visiting days and hours for the palace:

  • April to June: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • July to August : 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Ticket prices:

  • Adults: €10
  • Children (6-17 years old) & students: €5
  • Groups and Agencies: available upon request

Nevertheless, the Changing of the Guard ceremony grabbed my enthusiasm. There’s something undeniably regal about watching guards dressed in smart uniforms execute their duties with precision.

Now, buckle up for a thrilling descent from the Rock! As the bus winds through narrow streets, you’ll be craning your neck in awe at the beautiful architecture — this ride is full of unexpected twists and breathtaking views!

MONACO’S DINING DIVERSITY

By now, my tummy was audibly growling like a dull chainsaw.

It was time to embark on a culinary quest worthy of the food gods! With the picturesque streets of Monaco as my backdrop, I set out to find a restaurant where I could sit back, relax, and indulge in some truly scrumdiddlyumptiousness.

Now, in Monaco, the choices are as diverse as a catwalk fashion show —from the finest of fine dining establishments where you’d need a bank loan to cover the bill, to the cozy, elegant spots that still cry “class” as they casually drain your wallet.

Somewhere in between, there’s fast food that might make your arteries groan in protest but could soothe your cravings in a pinch.

After perusing countless menus like a contestant on a bizarre version of “The Price is Right,” I finally stumbled upon Steak & Shake.

Yes, I know what you’re thinking: “Is this a fine dining experience or a place where I can unashamedly consume burgers in my pajamas?”

It might not be the height of culinary sophistication, but it was the most wallet-friendly option that promised to delight my taste buds without making my tummy recoil during the train ride back to Cannes.

Also, I didn’t need to take out a second mortgage to pay the bill. 🙃

SEARCHING FOR THE MONTE CARLO DUCK

Souvenir shopping was next on the agenda, a delightful treasure hunt that promised to be more thrilling than a reality TV show finale.

Just like my culinary quest, I dove into the search for quaint little shops that offered a collection of trinkets without putting my wallet in a financial chokehold.

I was on the hunt for that perfect memento — a cute rubbery duckie that wouldn’t have me applying for a third mortgage.

With each store I entered, I felt like an explorer uncovering local gems that whispered stories of culture, art, and a touch of whimsy, all just waiting to become cherished reminders of my adventures. I stumbled upon some adorable souvenirs that will keep this adventure close to my heart!

Unfortunately, my quest for that charming ‘Monte Carlo’ rubber duckie ended in a quack-tastrophe.

ONCE MORE AROUND THE BLOCK

Before making my way to the train station, I decided to take one last delightful tour on the Hop On/Hop Off bus. This gave me yet another opportunity to soak in Monaco’s beauty while capturing some stunning photographs.

As the bus meandered through charming streets lined with historic architecture, I felt inspired to capture the elegance of this picturesque setting, ensuring I had lasting memories of the enchanting scenery before my journey continued.
