Well, fellow globetrotters, my notriphobia is messing with my travitude, which is making me holgry.
It’s been a few months since my last adventure, and my coworkers are so fed up with my travsessedness that they told me to go on another adventure just to give them some quiet time.
Yes, I’m kidding (not by much though).
Destination: Unknown
Picking my next destination wasn’t easy. It required homework, research and a few Hallmark movies.
My shortlist?
Five cities, each with its own secret charm and set of travel curveballs:
Riga, Ljubljana, Warsaw, Plovdiv, and Bucharest.
I compared them the way a foodie sizes up a buffet: craving something different, accessible, and packed with flavor.
Each city hid a twist or two beneath the surface.
Each city whispered its own siren song, but none gave up their secrets easily.
Here’s what I uncovered while sleuthing through guidebooks, blogs and way too many Google search tabs:
Riga: Baltic Beauty or Baltic Riddle?
Let’s talk travel logistics: Riga is a breeze to reach, with direct, budget-friendly flights from major European hubs and plenty of options for both early birds and last-minute adventurers.
Riga tempted me with its striking Art Nouveau architecture. Think whimsical facades, sculpted doorways, and more photo ops than your camera roll can handle! The city actually boasts the largest collection of Art Nouveau buildings in the world.
Did you know Riga’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its winding alleys and pastel-hued facades?
Safety is a big plus here: Riga is considered one of Europe’s safest cities for solo travelers, with a friendly local vibe and well-lit streets.
Activities? A jackpot for explorers, from riverside markets to moody Baltic nights in cozy pubs.
Ljubljana: Fairytale Facades, Hidden Hurdles
Travel logistics first: Ljubljana is accessible via flights from most major European cities, though be prepared for a layover or two if you’re coming from further afield.
History buffs, rejoice! Ljubljana’s roots stretch back to Roman times, and its Old Town is a treasure trove of Baroque and medieval architecture, cobbled lanes, and colorful facades.
If you’re traveling solo, Ljubljana is a dream: the city consistently ranks as one of Europe’s safest and friendliest capitals.
Streets are well-lit, locals are welcoming, and the relaxed café culture means you’ll never feel out of place wandering or people-watching on your own.
Warsaw: Past, Present & Puzzle Pieces
Warsaw rolled out layers of history, hearty pierogi, and a lively arts scene.
Museum lovers rejoice: POLIN Museum, Warsaw Uprising Museum, and more.
The only snag? My desire.
It wasn’t strong. I’ve visited Poland and wanted to adventure in a country I’d yet to explore.
The abundance of direct flights, and the city’s hotel scene makes it a logistical sweet spot in case the other choices don’t pan out.
Plovdiv: Ancient Stones, Modern Mystique
Plovdiv, like Warsaw, made the list because the logistics are just too easy to ignore.
Direct flights and affordable trains from Sofia mean you can be wandering the city’s ancient streets within hours of landing.
Plovdiv wears its history on its sleeve. As one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, it’s home to layers of Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman influence.
But here’s my honest twist: I’ve already explored Bulgaria.
A return trip isn’t exactly shooting to the top of my bucket list right now.
Plovdiv might be easy to reach, but I’m craving fresh territory.
Still, if you haven’t been, Plovdiv’s lively art scene, cheerful street art, and magnetic Kapana district might just win you over.
For solo travelers, the city is generally safe, and locals are helpful; just watch for the occasional cobblestone trip hazard after dark.
Bucharest: Boulevards and Wildcards
Once known as the “Little Paris of the East,” Bucharest offers a vibrant past mix of bold street art, lively cafes, and buzzing nightlife.
Here, you can wander the atmospheric Old Town (Lipscani), where centuries-old churches, quirky bars, and artisan shops line cobbled streets that have seen everything from medieval merchants to modern revolutionaries.
For solo travelers, Bucharest is an unexpectedly welcoming and safe destination. Central areas are well-patrolled, locals are friendly and eager to help, and the city’s youthful energy means you’ll rarely feel alone, whether you’re people-watching at a sidewalk cafe or exploring after dark.
Caveat: Bucharest’s legendary traffic means you’ll need some patience and a good podcast lineup for cross-town excursions.
Travel tip:
When plotting your city showdown, don’t just dream about the Instagram shots.
Dig into flights, hotel options, and whether your favorite style of exploration matches your destination’s rhythm.
Sometimes the best destination is the one that makes getting there as fun as being there.

Digging through blogs, scrolling maps, and comparing reviews isn’t just a box to check; it’s where my adventure always begins.

The more I learn about a place, the more I can design an itinerary that’s just right for me.

Doing the homework is half the fun, and it always pays off in those magical, unscripted moments when I’m wandering a city that already feels a little familiar.
